tales from the ditch

hilltop hy-vee: ditchville’s one redeeming quality

I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.

Today, I found something in Ditchville that is more than Ditchville-good.  It’s actually good.
And, of all things, it’s the Hilltop Hy-Vee supermarket.
I thought I could never again stand in awe at the variety and choice offered to the American consumer.  I thought I had seen it all and lost my sense of wonder.  I scoffed, jaded and annoyed, about Times Square.  The Mall of America?  Just another mall.  You get the picture.
I’m a savvy retail consumer and I’ve shopped ’til I’ve dropped on more than one occasion.  But I stood in awe at the retail mecca that is the Hilltop Hy-Vee.
The Hilltop Hy-Vee has: clothing, candles, lotions, loofahs, slippers, handbags, hemp milk, hemp seeds, Helluva Good brand dairy products, coffee, takeout of every stripe, dog beds, dog bones made in USA, videos, dropboxes for utility bills, teas, coffees, doughnuts, Bom Dia acai juices, seriously, it has everything that is good and right with the grocery industry.  I could spend $800 there.  Easy.  (But the St Peter Co-op still has better produce, and, potentially, meats – I didn’t really check out the meat and seafood at Hy-Vee; there was just too much to see in one trip.)
My mind was so blown by this shopping extravaganza (in which I purchased milk chocolate Ghiradelli chips, Hope Creamery butter, Helluva Good cheese, and Breton crackers) that I am going to write letters commending the managers.  I mean, seriously, that place is how big and carries how much stuff and it’s still well-merchandised?  That’s insanity.
Good job, retail marketplace.  You’ve refreshed my sense of wonder at the variety and quality of options available to me.
